Abstract

We aimed at evaluating if the uptake of silica nanoparticles (SiO2-NPs) by human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) could exert any functional effects that might ultimately impact on hMSC regenerative potential. Our findings so far provide evidence that SiO2-NPs do not only passively interact with hMSCs, but also actively engage in mediating biological effects, some of which might ultimately result in an augmented stem cell regenerative potential.

The possibility that NP-induced modification of cell membrane mechanical behaviour might accompany these phenotypic changes will be discussed.
